  • Harmer Architecture was commissioned by Maryborough District Health Service and the Victorian State Government Department of Health and Human Services to design new Student Accommodation on the hospital site in Nightingale Street, Maryborough.

This Project is the first stage of a major redevelopment of this regional hospital site. The student accommodation project provides 16 short-term and 4 long-term accommodation places for clinical students across multiple disciplines.

The project enhances learning outcomes for students by enabling stronger connections with the hospital, create an improved environment for teaching and training and facilitate more social interaction between students as well as enabling mentoring and guidance from hospital staff.

The MDHS wanted to add social capital to the Maryborough Community, and wish to be more than just a service provider. The student Accommodation project therefore adds significant value to the community by helping enhance the pathway for students from secondary to tertiary education. The Student Accommodation Project also enhance the recent COIL initiatives which focus on training within the hospital environment.

Harmer team created a collegiate atmosphere in the new accommodation that encourages social interaction between students and staff in the same way that university colleges create an atmosphere of camaraderie and mentoring that enhances the learning experience.

The addition of a new residential facility to the Maryborough Hospital campus also add to the activity on site and broadens the presence of the hospital in the community as a place where students live and learn the skills of caring and nursing.

The project was completed early 2023.
