  • The University of Melbourne commissioned Harmer Architecture to design a new research centre for the ARC Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science.

    The project was completed in March 2018.

    The new centre focuses on research into manipulating the way light energy is absorbed, transported and transformed in advanced molecular materials. 

    The research programme spans high-throughput computational screening, single molecule photochemistry and ultrafast spectroscopy and embraces innovative outreach and commercial translation activities.

    The Centre plans to capture the knowledge generated as new intellectual property, materials processing know-how, and through the creation of new employment opportunities.

    The expected outcomes and benefits include new Australian technologies in solar energy conversion, energy-efficient lighting and displays, security labelling and optical sensor platforms for defence.

    Located on the north west side of Level 3 of the Chemistry Building, the new centre is divided into the administration hub and the research laboratory area, consisting of:

    • The admin office area for up to 23 students, staff, and researchers

    • Meeting room

    • A breakout tea area

    • Wet area chemistry laboratory

    • Lab prep area

    • 3 dry instrument rooms

    • 3 laser rooms

    • Chem store and weighing room

    • Dangerous goods storage room

    The main entry of the centre is identified through the angled ocular wall and overlapping coloured stainless steel cladding to resemble a lens aperture.
