Harmer Architecture recently completed the First Stage of a major upgrade to the Neighbourhood Justice Centre (NJC) in Wellington St, Collingwood.
The Centre is unique in Victoria in the delivery of Justice to the local community. Although a Magistrates Court, NJC is also a Community Justice Centre which has a close relationship with the local community of Yarra.
NJC provides onsite services to help reduce offending and associated problems of mental health, substance abuse and social disadvantage.
The First Stage the upgrade has created a new workplace environment for various agencies of back-of-house staff on the Second Floor including:
Fitzroy Legal Services
Community Connection Service
Victoria Legal Aid
Client Services
The future Second Stage (pictured right) will involve provision of an additional Court Room and a revitalised Café on the First Floor alongside other improved security measures and amenities for staff and improved public spaces for visitors
On the Ground Level, new facilities and a dedicated Entry for victims of family violence will greatly add to the community accessibility of the Centre. Special design features in the new Court Room will minimise the anxiety some witnesses might feel when they appear to give evidence.
NJC is known internationally for its unique and successful management of community justice in a challenging inner urban milieu.

Client Testimonial
“The NJC found working with Harmer Architects to be a very positive experience. They were responsive, allowed sufficient time for staff consultation and were able to engage with us on all details of the design.
We are very pleased with the results of the refurbishment project, and look forward to working with Harmer for Stage 2 once funding is secured. “
